Nagomi Town: Ancient Keyhole Burial Mound from Which National Treasure Iron Sword Was Excavated

Nagomi Town, Tamana-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture, is an agricultural area in the middle reaches of Kikuchi River. "Etafunayama Kofun" is a keyhole-shaped burial mound constructed at the end of the 5th century, known for the excavation of a "National Treasure iron sword with silver inlay inscription" in the 1873 archaeological survey. This iron sword has the same inscription as the iron sword excavated from Inariyama Kofun โ€” an important historical material indicating the relationship between the ancient Yamato government and Kyushu.

Nagomi Town History and Folk Museum

"Nagomi Town History and Folk Museum (Kikuichi Roman-kan)" exhibits excavated items from Etafunayama Kofun, models, and surrounding historical materials. The National Treasure iron sword (reproduction) is also exhibited, allowing learning about the relationship between ancient Kyushu and the Yamato government.

Nature of Kikuchi River

Kikuchi River flowing through Nagomi Town is known for clear water, with spring cherry tree-lined roads and summer waterside scenery being beautiful. Many local anglers gather during the ayu fishing season.

Tabaruzaka

"Tabaruzaka (Tamana City)" near Nagomi Town was a fierce battle site of the 1877 Seinan War. The site where the Satsuma army and government forces clashed for 17 days is currently developed as "Tabaruzaka Park."
