Suizenji Jojuen Garden: Hosokawa Domain Daimyo Garden in Central Kumamoto

"Suizenji Jojuen Garden" in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, is a strolling daimyo garden for which construction was begun in 1636 (Kanei 13) by Hosokawa Tadatoshi (first domain lord of Kumamoto domain). Also commonly called "Suizenji Park," designated as a National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty as a representative garden of Kumamoto.

Garden Modeled on the Fifty-Three Stages of Tokaido

The garden is said to be a strolling garden condensing the scenery of the fifty-three stages of the Tokaido. Momoyama-style hills, ponds, grass, pines, and stone lanterns are skillfully arranged, with ingenuity at various points including a hill representing Mt. Fuji and paths passing through torii gates. Natural water scenery of "Aso spring water" flowing into the pond is also a highlight.

Izumi Shrine and Noh Theater

"Izumi Shrine" is enshrined within the garden, worshipping successive generations of Hosokawa domain lords as deities. Traditional performing arts performances including takigi-noh and kyogen are also held at the noh theater in spring and autumn.

Cherry Blossoms and Autumn Foliage

The beauty of four seasons can be enjoyed with spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. During cherry blossom season in particular, many flower-viewing visitors arrive, with flower viewing and garden strolling enjoyable.
