Itsuki Village: A Mountain Village Secret Spot Alive at the Headwaters of Kuma River
"Itsuki Village" in Kuma-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a mountain village of approximately 1,000 people at the headwaters of Kuma River. Known as a "secret spot" with settlements scattered in a basin surrounded by deep Kyushu Mountains, unique culture has been nurtured since ancient times. "Itsuki no Komoriuta (Itsuki Lullaby)" is nationally known as one of Japan's Three Great Lullabies.
Itsuki Lullaby
Itsuki no Komoriuta is a nostalgic lullaby said to have been sung by girls who went out to work as servants. A folk song created to "protect odome (young children)," the unique scale and lyrics reflect Itsuki Village's nature and culture. "Itsuki no Komoriuta no Yakata (Itsuki Lullaby Hall)" exists within the village, allowing learning about the lullaby's history and culture.
Itsuki Dam and Headwaters Scenery
Itsuki Village has "Itsuki Dam (Ichibusa Dam)," with mountaineering and hiking on "Ichifusa Mountain" enjoyable around the dam lake. Spring cherry blossoms around the dam are also beautiful.
Secret Spot Drive and Minshuku
National Route 388 around Itsuki Village is a scenic drive route known as "Kyushu's secret spot route." Scenery of deep mountain passes, gorges, and settlements can be enjoyed. Minshuku accommodation with local cuisine is also available within the village.
Access
Virtually no public transportation — car access required. Approximately 1 hour via National Route 388 from within Hitoyoshi City. Also accessible via National Route 219.
