Stage of Taiko's Flower Viewing
Daigoji is an ancient Shingon sect temple founded by Shobo Rigen Daishi in 874. Known for Toyotomi Hideyoshi planting 700 cherry trees and holding a grand flower viewing in his later years, the "Daigo Flower Viewing" is passed down as one of history's largest flower viewing parties.
UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Assets
The five-story pagoda (National Treasure), built in 951, is the oldest wooden building in Kyoto Prefecture. Sanpoin Garden (National Treasure, Special Historic Site, Special Scenic Spot) is a dignified garden designed with Hideyoshi's involvement. Reihokan stores items associated with Hideyoshi.
Spectacular Spring Cherry Blossoms
About 1,000 diverse cherry trees are planted in the grounds, blooming in sequence from late March to early April. With many notable trees like Sanpoin's "Daigo Weeping Cherry," the cherry blossom season is particularly crowded.
Daigoyama Hiking
Kami-Daigo is on the summit of Daigoyama, with hiking up the mountain trail to worship also popular. The sacred atmosphere of mountain summit views and ancient halls allows experiencing the true essence of Daigoji in the mountains.
