Gion Matsuri: One of Japan's Three Great Festivals, Yasaka Shrine Festival Coloring Kyoto Summer
Gion Matsuri
1100 Years of History
Gion Matsuri began in 869 as a prayer for epidemic relief and has over 1,100 years of history. From July 1-31, various ceremonies and events are held over the entire month, Kyoto's major summer event.
Yamaboko Procession
The yamaboko procession on July 17 (Sakimatsuri) and 24 (Atomatsuri) is the festival's highlight. Mountains and pikes decorated with gorgeous hanging ornaments parading through central Kyoto to the "Kon-chiki-chin" of Gion hayashi music is overwhelming.
Yoiyama Evening
The "Yoiyama" evening before the procession illuminates yamaboko with lanterns, wrapping the entire city in a fantastical atmosphere. Food stalls line the pedestrian shopping streets with yukata-wearing people gathering — Kyoto's signature summer scene.
UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
Registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. The elaborate embroidery and ornaments on yamaboko are called the "moving museum," including precious crafts from the Muromachi period.
