Kyoto Machiya: Townhouse Culture Preserving Kyoto's Historic Streetscapes
Kyoto Machiya
Living Cultural Heritage
Kyoto machiya are traditional wooden buildings inheriting Edo period architectural styles. The narrow-frontage, deep-interior layout called "eel beds" originated from the wisdom of an era when taxes were determined by frontage width.
Architectural Features
Townhouse-specific architectural elements are visible throughout: latticed doors, tsubo-niwa courtyard gardens, "okudo-san" (cooking stoves), and tiered structures. "Tori-niwa" (through-garden earth floor) continues from entrance to kitchen, ensuring light and ventilation.
New Forms of Utilization
Recently, machiya converted into cafes, hotels, galleries, and shops have increased, breathing new life into historic buildings. Accommodation facilities in machiya have also increased, a popular stay style with tourists.
Conservation and Utilization Efforts
Kyoto City is working on machiya preservation under the "Kyoto City Historical Feature Maintenance and Improvement Plan." Active support for machiya repair and utilization by private organizations advances transmission to the next generation.
