Transform into a Maiko!

The "maiko transformation experience" is very popular as a special Kyoto experience. At specialized studios, visitors receive maiko costume, wig, and makeup to become just like a real maiko. A very popular activity with domestic and international tourists.

Authentic Transformation

With white makeup, styled wigs (various traditional styles), gorgeous furisode kimono, decorative hairpins, and hanao sandals, visitors are transformed into authentic maiko. The transformation and photography takes about 2-3 hours.

Photography Spots

After transformation, visitors can stroll Gion's cobblestones, Yasaka Shrine, and Kiyomizuzaka in maiko attire, or take commemorative photos in the studio. Many studios also provide professional photographer services.

Real Hanamachi Culture

Separate from the transformation experience, many programs are available to watch performances by real maiko and geiko and learn about hanamachi culture, especially recommended for those wanting deeper knowledge of Kyoto's traditional culture.
