Nishiki Market

Kyoto's Kitchen

Nishiki Market is a shopping street with about 130 stores continuing from the early Edo period, affectionately called "Kyoto's Kitchen" by Kyoto residents and tourists. Located north of Shijo-dori, it is a long, narrow market covered by an arcade.

Diverse Kyoto Gourmet

Kyoto vegetables (Kamo eggplant, Manganji peppers, Kujo leeks), Kyoto tofu, Kyoto pickles (suguki, senmaizuke, shibazuke), chirimen sansho, and yuba are abundantly available. Numerous prepared food and skewer shops also allow food walking.

Inheritance of Tradition

Many long-established shops continuing since the end of the Edo period each maintain their unique production methods and flavors. Specialty stores handling Kyoto cuisine ingredients are authentic markets visited by chefs and restaurant head cooks for procurement.

Popular with Tourists Too

Recently very popular with domestic and international tourists, with the food walking style firmly established. Many shops offer tastings, making it an easy spot to experience Kyoto gourmet.
