Kyoto Nishiyama: Quiet Temple Tour of Oharano, Yoshiminoji, and Komyoji
Kyoto Nishiyama
Quiet Famous Temple Area
Kyoto's Nishiyama is a quiet mountain village away from the tourist bustle of the city center, dotted with historic shrines and temples. A hidden gem tourist area where seasonal flowers color the grounds — cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and autumn foliage.
Yoshiminoji
Yoshiminoji, an ancient Tendai sect temple on the middle slopes of the Nishiyama mountains, has spectacular views from the grounds overlooking Kyoto City and the Osaka plain. Known as a spot for spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage.
Komyoji
Komyoji, built on the site where Honen Shonin (founder of Jodo sect) devoted himself to nembutsu, is famous for the spring "momiji sando" (maple approach path) and autumn foliage. The November foliage from the main gate along the maple approach is overwhelming.
Oharano Shrine
Oharano Shrine, established by transferring the deity from Kasuga Taisha in Nara, is also called "Kyoto's Kasuga." White deer are kept in the grounds, and a dignified atmosphere pervades this site connected to Kasuga Taisha.
