Philosopher's Path: Kyoto's Spring Walking Path Along Cherry Blossoms and the Canal
Philosopher's Path
Cherry Blossom Corridor
The Philosopher's Path is approximately 2km of walking path alongside the Lake Biwa Canal branch. From late March to early April, about 500 cherry trees planted along the canal reach full bloom, creating a fantastical light pink tunnel landscape.
Kitaro Nishida and the Philosopher's Path
Named "Philosopher's Path" because representative Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida walked this path daily in contemplation. Being close to Kyoto University, many cultural figures and scholars have walked it.
Cafes and Galleries Along the Path
Cafes, galleries, and craft shops in converted old houses are scattered along the Philosopher's Path, perfect companions for a stroll. Hidden gems offering relaxed time while viewing spring cherry blossoms are popular.
Nearby Attractions
Many famous temples including Ginkakuji (Jishoji), Nanzenji, and Eikando are near the Philosopher's Path, combinable as a walking course. The autumn foliage season also makes this a beautiful path.
