Akame Forty-Eight Waterfalls

Gorge of Cascading Waterfalls

Akame Forty-Eight Waterfalls, located in Muroakame Aoyama Quasi-National Park, features numerous waterfalls from Koritorinoaki Falls to Gankutsu Falls. Walking the approximately 4km course allows enjoyment of varied waterfall scenery.

Habitat of Japanese Giant Salamander

Akame Gorge is also known as a habitat for the "Japanese Giant Salamander," a special natural monument. Near the gorge entrance, the Japan Salamander Center displays rare amphibians.

Sacred Ground of Waterfall Training

The name "Akame" is said to derive from En no Gyoja (a Buddhist ascetic) encountering a red-eyed cow (messenger of Fudo Myoo) during training. It has long been known as a training ground for mountain asceticism.

Four Seasons of Enjoyment

Fresh greenery in spring, cool waterfall tours in summer, autumn foliage, and frozen waterfalls in winter show different faces throughout the seasons, with summer particularly busy with visitors seeking coolness.
