Iga Ninja

Birthplace of Ninja

Iga City is known as the birthplace of Iga-ryu ninjutsu, with the basin geography of northwestern Mie said to have been ideal for ninja training. During the Edo period, Iga ninja served the Tokugawa shogunate in important roles.

Iga-ryu Ninja Museum

This museum converted from an authentic ninja house offers experiences of hidden doors and trapdoors. Daily ninja shuriken throwing and martial arts demonstration shows are very popular.

Iga Ueno Castle

Iga Ueno Castle adjacent to the museum features impressive stone walls built by Todo Takatora. The castle tower overlooks Iga Basin, and visitors can feel the history of Iga City, also the birthplace of poet Matsuo Basho.

Ninja Costume Experiences

Ninja costume rentals are available throughout the city for disguised street walking experiences. Tastings of "ninja food" (traditional high-nutrition foods) are also popular tourist activities.
