Meoto Iwa: Sacred Couple Rocks of Futamigaura Standing as a Symbol of Ise
Meoto Iwa
Sacred Matchmaking Rocks
Meoto Iwa are sacred rocks in the precincts of Futami Okitama Shrine, considered the torii gate for Okitama divine rock 700 meters offshore. The large rock (male) is 9 meters tall and the small rock (female) 4 meters, connected by a 35cm-diameter thick shimenawa rope.
Summer Solstice Sunrise
Around the summer solstice, a spectacular view of Mount Fuji and the sunrise aligned between the couple rocks can be seen, drawing many photographers from early morning.
Frog Statues
Numerous frog statues are placed around Meoto Iwa, dedicated by people wishing for travel safety and matchmaking due to Japanese wordplay: "return safely" and "happiness returns."
Futamigaura Swimming and Morning Walks
Futamigaura has long been known as a purification spot before Ise pilgrimage, with many inns. Early morning quiet beach walks combined with sunrise viewing at the couple rocks are recommended.
