Owase Seafood: Bounty of Kumano-Nada and Fishing Town Food Culture
Owase Seafood
Fertile Sea Nurtured by the Kuroshio
Owase City faces Kumano-Nada influenced by the Kuroshio Current, boasting abundant catches. Diverse seafood is landed from large fish like bonito, tuna, and yellowtail to fresh octopus and squid.
Mehari Sushi
"Mehari sushi," Owase's representative local food, is a simple dish of rice balls wrapped in takana (mustard leaf). Said to be named "mehari" (eye-opening) for being so large, it has been loved as fishermen's lunch.
Owase Cypress
Owase is also famous as a producing area of "Owase Cypress," one of Japan's three great forests. High-quality lumber grown in Japan's rainiest region competes with Kiso cypress in quality.
Access and Tourism
At "Sakana Machi Terasu" in Owase, local fresh fish can be purchased, and dining halls offer freshly landed seafood dishes. It is also used as accommodation for Kumano Kodo tours.
