Matsushima and Basho: The Truth Behind "Matsushima ya, Ah Matsushima ya"

The Mystery of Matsushima and Basho

Matsushima Bay in Matsushima, Miyagi — one of Japan's Three Views with about 260 islands — is famous for the haiku "Matsushima ya, ah Matsushima ya, Matsushima ya." However, no such Matsushima haiku actually appears in Matsuo Basho's travel diary "Oku no Hosomichi." Various theories suggest Basho was speechless at its beauty, or that the famous verse is a later forgery.
