Nakasendo's Largest Post Town
Narai-juku in Shiojiri City, Nagano is a Nakasendo post town, a large post town also called "Narai Sengen (Narai Thousand Houses)." The townscape of Edo-period wooden buildings continuing about 1km is selected as a National Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District.
Edo-Period Atmosphere
Narai-juku's townscape preserves traditional architectural designs including latticed doors, projecting beams, and woven lattice, strongly retaining the Edo-period post town atmosphere. Some former hatago (inns) still operate as accommodation facilities.
Narai-juku Traditional Crafts
Narai-juku is also known as a production area for traditional crafts including lacquerware, combs, and woodwork. Traditional crafts made by local craftsmen can be purchased at souvenir shops along the highway, with some workshops also offering trial creation experiences.
