Nagano Prefecture is Japan's 2nd largest apple production area after Aomori, nationally known as "Shinshu Apple." Major production areas including Nagano City, Nakano City, and Iizuna Town have many apple farm stands opening in autumn (September-November).
Varieties Born in Shinshu
Nagano Prefecture is also known for developing its own apple varieties. "Shinano Gold" (1995 variety registration), "Shinano Sweet," and "Shinano Dolce" are varieties developed by Nagano Prefecture, with "Shinano Gold" also exported to Italy.
Apple Sightseeing Farms
In apple production areas including Nagano City, Nakano City, and Iizuna Town, many sightseeing farms allow apple picking in autumn. The sweetness and crunchiness of apples directly picked from trees is exceptional, one of the pleasures when visiting Nagano.
