Asuka Village is the center of the Asuka period when capitals were established in the 6th-7th centuries. Here Prince Shotoku established the Cap-and-Rank System and Seventeen Article Constitution, the Taika Reform was carried out, and the foundations of the Japanese state were formed.
Ishibutai Tumulus
Ishibutai Tumulus, made of large granite stones, is the largest Asuka burial mound said to be the tomb of Soga no Umako. The exposed horizontal stone chamber is Japan's largest class, with visitors able to enter and view.
Takamatsuzuka and Kitora Tumuli
Takamatsuzuka tumulus wall paintings are colorful human figure paintings from late 7th to early 8th century, National Treasures conveying clothing and culture of the time. Kitora tumulus' Four Gods paintings (Genbu, Suzaku, Byakko, Seiryu) are also National Treasures, with a museum seasonally displaying the actual wall paintings.
Electric Bicycle Cycling
The Asuka area has much flat terrain, making electric-assist bicycle cycling the standard tourism style. Rental bicycle shops are at various locations for feeling the breeze of the ancient capital while touring historical sites.
