Itoigawa: Jade Production Area
Itoigawa City has been known as a jade production area since ancient times. Natural jade is found in the Jade Gorge in the upper Hime River, and Itoigawa jade has been excavated from Jomon-period ruins throughout Japan. In 2016, it was certified as Japanese Heritage "Jade Magatama Road."
Jade Gathering Experience
On Itoigawa City beaches (Jade Coast, Oyashirazu Coast area), lucky visitors can find jade pieces in the sand. The "jade gathering" experience of finding jade among waves-polished stones is unique, with many tourists walking the beaches.
Fossa Magna
Itoigawa is located at the western end of Fossa Magna (the geological boundary dividing the Japanese archipelago east-west). The Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line is an important geological structure dividing eastern and western Japan, and the Fossa Magna Museum teaches its history.
