Kasugayama Castle Ruins in Joetsu City, Niigata is known as the residence of Sengoku era strategist Uesugi Kenshin (1530-1578). Designated a National Historic Site, the entire mountain remains as mountain castle ruins. Now developed as a park for exploring the castle ruins.
Kenshin-Related Temples and Shrines
Temples and shrines related to Kenshin are scattered around the castle ruins. Rinsen-ji Temple has Kenshin's memorial tablet installed, attracting many worshippers venerating Kenshin. The Uesugi Kenshin statue is also famous, greeting visitors with its dignified pose.
Naoetsu and Port History
Naoetsu in Joetsu City was an important port area that flourished since ancient times, a key port in Japan Sea trade as a Kitamaebune (merchant ship) stopover. Sado Island can also be seen from Naoetsu's coast.
