๐Ÿš Niigata|May 11, 2026

New Year Culture in Snow Country

Niigata's New Year has unique charm surrounded by snowfall. New Year visits to Yahiko Shrine, Niigata Gokoku Shrine, and others bustle with many worshippers, and the combination of New Year's Eve bell and first shrine visit is a snow country New Year unique experience.

Small New Year Rural Events

Traditional rural events are held throughout the region on January 15 (Koshogatsu/Small New Year). "Dondo-yaki" (burning New Year decorations to pray for a healthy year) is performed in rural areas throughout Niigata.

Year-End at Hot Springs

Many hot spring resorts in Niigata (Echigo-Yuzawa, Tsukioka, Senami, etc.) offer special year-end plans, and trips to welcome the New Year while soaking in hot springs are popular. The New Year's morning sun viewed from a snow-view bath is an exceptional experience.
