Naeba Mountain and Highland Wetlands: A Paradise on the Echigo Roof

๐Ÿš Niigata|May 11, 2026

Summit Pond Clusters

Naeba Mountain (2,145m) is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains on the Niigata-Nagano border. Near the summit, vast wetlands and numerous "chitou" (wetland ponds) spread out, allowing enjoyment of alpine wetland scenery called the "Roof of Echigo."

Summer Alpine Plants

Diverse alpine plants bloom in Naeba Mountain's summer wetlands. Alpine plants including chinguruma, hakusanichibana, and kobaikeso color the wetland, captivating visitors with the summit's flower paradise.

Autumn Grass Foliage

In autumn, "kusa-momiji" (grass foliage) begins as the wetland grasses turn golden and red. The colors of foliage reflected on wetland pond surfaces are painting-like in beauty, with many hikers pointing cameras.
