Sado Island Toki (Crested Ibis): Recovery of an Endangered Species
Sacred Land of Ibis Conservation
Sado Island is where the toki (crested ibis, scientific name Nipponia nippon), once extinct in the wild in Japan, has been protected and bred, and wild toki now live on the island. Sado Island, which achieved wild ibis recovery, draws world attention as a sacred land for endangered species conservation.
Toki Observation
Wild toki inhabit various places on the island, observable in rice paddies and satoyama natural settings. Agricultural lands protected by the "Satochi" certification system supporting toki habitat are coordinated with the Sado Toki Conservation Center.
Rich Sado Nature
Sado Island is blessed with rich natural environments, with abundant seafood (yellowtail, sweet shrimp, octopus) and mountain foods (wild vegetables, mushrooms). Farmstay agricultural experiences are also popular activities.
