Okayama Peach and Muscat: Japan's Highest Quality Fruits Raised in the Sunny Country
Okayama Prefecture, known as "Sunny Country Okayama" for its many sunny days annually, is nationally famous for high-quality fruit production utilizing its warm climate and fertile Okayama Plain. In particular, "Okayama white peach," "Muscat of Alexandria," and "Pione" grapes are prized as premium fruits for gifts.
Okayama White Peach
Okayama-grown white peaches are known as the highest quality peaches with thin skin, abundant juice, and outstanding sweetness and aroma. Unlike ordinary peaches, Okayama white peaches become sweeter as they ripen, and are shipped nationwide directly from the source during the June-late through August harvest season. Peach picking experiences at peach orchards are also available.
Muscat of Alexandria
When it comes to "muscat grapes," Okayama is the originating area, where Muscat of Alexandria introduced from Europe in the Meiji era was cultivated in earnest. These grapes with their distinctive sweet aroma and elegant sweetness are still produced in highest quality by greenhouse cultivation today.
