Shitennoji
Temple Built by Prince Shotoku
Shitennoji is said to have been built by Prince Shotoku as a vow to the Four Heavenly Kings before his battle with the Mononobe clan, then constructed as thanks for victory. The current complex was rebuilt in 1934, faithfully recreating the Asuka period layout.
Shitennoji-shiki Temple Layout
The "Shitennoji-shiki" layout with "central gate, pagoda, main hall, lecture hall" aligned in a straight line from south to north influenced many subsequent temples as the basic form of Japanese temple architecture.
Equinox Ceremonies and Fairs
On the 21st and 22nd of each month (Kobo Fair and Tenjin Fair), temple fairs are held in the grounds with diverse stalls selling antiques, daily goods, and food. Spring and autumn equinoxes bring many worshippers for ancestor memorials.
Turtle Pond and Pure Land Garden
The grounds' "turtle pond" is famous for many swimming turtles, a citizens' relaxation spot. The Pure Land garden near the West Gate is beloved as a garden with beautiful seasonal flowers.
