Sumiyoshi Taisha
Japan's Oldest Shrine Architecture
Sumiyoshi Taisha is an ancient shrine with over 2,000 years of history, with its unique architectural style called "Sumiyoshi-zukuri" designated as a National Treasure. It enshrines four deities and is worshipped as the deity of navigation, waka poetry, and agriculture.
Arched Bridge (Drum Bridge)
The arched bridge over the pond is Sumiyoshi Taisha's symbol. Crossing the steeply curved bridge is said to represent "purification" from the secular world to the sacred domain. At New Year's, it is one of Osaka's premier hatsumode spots with long lines.
Sumiyoshi Festival
Sumiyoshi Festival held in July-August is Sumiyoshi Taisha's summer grand festival. The "mikoshi procession" and "procession of the mikoshi to the sacred pond" are highlights, drawing many people as the finale of Osaka's Three Great Summer Festivals.
Surrounding Attractions
Sumiyoshi public park, Shinsekai, and Abeno Harukas concentrate in the Sumiyoshi Taisha area, providing convenient combination with diverse Osaka tourism.
