Tenjin Matsuri: One of Japan's Three Great Festivals, the Grand Festival Coloring Osaka Summer
Tenjin Matsuri
Osaka's Largest Summer Festival
Tenjin Matsuri is the annual festival of Osaka Tenmangu, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, with over 1,000 years of history. The July 25 main festival features large-scale ceremonies with land processions (rikuto-gyo) and river processions (funa-togyo) of the mikoshi.
Spectacular River Procession
Numerous boats on the Okawa River with hayashi musicians, geiko, and maiko aboard represent the festival's greatest highlight. The scene of the illuminated fleet and fireworks reflecting on the Okawa's surface is the "signature of Naniwa summer."
Dedicated Fireworks Festival
Tenjin Matsuri's dedicated fireworks festival launches about 4,000 fireworks annually, one of Osaka's premier fireworks displays. Areas around Temmabashi and Sakuranomiya overflow with people, coloring Osaka's summer nights.
Access and Viewing Locations
Five-minute walk from Minamimorimachi Station on Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line. The river procession can be viewed from embankments along the Okawa River, with paid viewing areas also available. Enjoying the pre-festival evening ceremony adds to Tenjin Matsuri's appeal.
