Nanatsugama: Natural Art Carved by the Rough Waves of Genkai

"Nanatsugama" is located on the coast facing Genkai Sea (Genkaizada), northwest of Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. It is a collective term for 7 sea caves formed by ocean erosion in cliffs of columnar jointing (structure of hexagonal basalt columns arranged) approximately 20โ€“25 meters high and approximately 3โ€“10 meters wide. Designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument.

Viewing from Sightseeing Boat

Nanatsugama can be viewed from the cliff top on land, but viewing by "pleasure boat (sightseeing boat)" is recommended for an impactful experience. Riding the boat allows close-up observation of the interior of each cave (cancellations occur due to weather and wave conditions). The impactful sight of seawater entering the hollow inside the cave can be experienced.

Surrounding Scenic Spots

"Genkai Quasi-National Park" spreads around Nanatsugama, with many scenic spots including Yobuko cliffs, Kakara Island, and Ogawa Island. Combined viewing is possible from sightseeing boats from Yobuko.

Access

Approximately 40 minutes by bus from JR Karatsu Line "Karatsu Station" (take bus toward "Yobuko" to "Yobuko," then further by bus or taxi). Or approximately 30 minutes by car from central Karatsu.
