Mount Buko and Chichibu: The Limestone Mountain and Cement Town
Mt. Buko: Symbol of Chichibu
Mt. Buko (1,304m) is the symbolic mountain of Chichibu, visible from the Chichibu basin. Made entirely of limestone, the peak area has changed shape over years of cement quarrying. Yet it continues to be cherished by the people of Chichibu.
Chichibu Limestone Industry
Mt. Buko's limestone was an important resource supporting Japan's modernization and construction industry, and Chichibu developed as a cement production center for many years. The industrial history as "Chichibu Cement Town" is deeply rooted in local culture.
Climbing and Satoyama Charm
Hiking trails are developed to the summit, offering a panoramic view of the Chichibu basin and Kanto Plain. At Hitsuji-yama Park at the mountain base, moss phlox (shibazakura) blooms spectacularly in late April, spreading a pink carpet.
