Chichibu Night Festival: One of Japan's Three Great Float Festivals
One of Japan's Three Great Float Festivals
Chichibu Night Festival is held on December 2-3 at Chichibu Shrine, one of Japan's Three Great Float Festivals. Designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, it is a tradition continuing for over 300 years since the Edo period.
Fantastical Procession of Floats
The festival highlight is six decorated floats (kasaboko) and yatai processions from Chichibu Shrine to the temporary shrine. The spectacle of magnificently decorated floats moving through the winter night with illuminations is breathtaking.
Fireworks and Market Excitement
Fireworks launched into the December winter sky and the excitement of night stalls add splendor to the festival. Local foods including dango, amazake, and Chichibu soba are also enjoyable.
