Lake Biwa

Japan's Largest Lake

Lake Biwa is Japan's largest lake, about 63km north-south and 235km in circumference, formed over 4 million years ago as one of the world's ancient lakes. It has a rich ecosystem with many endemic species.

Scenic Lakeside Views

The lakeside has various expressions. The north lake (Nagahama, Takashima) has deep water and grand scenery; the south lake (Otsu, Kusatsu) is near urban areas with many users. Photogenic spots like Shirahige Shrine's lake torii are scattered throughout.

Eight Views of Lake Biwa

The "Eight Views of Lake Biwa" selected in the Edo period, including "Evening Snow on Hira" and "Wild Geese Descending on Omatsu Cape," continue to captivate travelers. New Eight Views have also been selected.

Marine Sports and Lake Experiences

Lake Biwa offers diverse marine sports including sailing, canoeing, wakeboarding, and SUP. Cruises on the sightseeing boat "Michigan" are also popular.
