Chikubu Island: Sacred Island of Benzaiten Floating in Lake Biwa
Chikubu Island
Sacred Site of Benzaiten
Chikubu Island is a small island about 2km in circumference, enshrining Hogon-ji Temple built in 724 by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu and Tsukubu Suma Shrine. As one of Japan's Three Great Benzaiten, it is known for blessings of fortune, performing arts, and matchmaking.
Hogon-ji Temple and Karamon Gate
Hogon-ji's Karamon Gate is a National Treasure building relocated from Fushimi Momoyama Castle. The elevated main hall overlooks spectacular Lake Biwa views, with distant mountains visible on clear days.
Kawarake Throwing
"Kawarake throwing" can be experienced at Tsukubu Suma Shrine grounds. Writing wishes on unglazed pottery saucers and throwing them toward the torii gate, with passing through the torii said to grant wishes.
Access to Chikubu Island
Regular sightseeing boats operate from Nagahama Port, Imazu Port, and Hikone Port. Worshipping on the island takes about 1.5-2 hours. The Lake Biwa scenery from the boat is also an enjoyable part of the trip.
