Harie Kabata
Living Water Culture
Kabata (Kawabata) is a traditional water use facility that draws in spring water for use as a kitchen. In Harie district, many households still use kabata actively, washing vegetables, raising koi, and using it as domestic water.
Village of Living Water
Harie is also called the "Village of Shozu (Living Water)," a region with abundant clear spring water. This spring water is groundwater before flowing into Lake Biwa, supporting residents' lives for many years.
Satoyama Guide Tours
Since kabata are on private land not generally open to the public, participation in guide tours is required. NPO-run guide tours allow learning in detail about kabata mechanisms and water culture with local residents' guidance.
Documentary Film
Harie's water culture was featured in the sixth episode of the documentary film "Gaia Symphony," gaining worldwide attention.
