Ishiyamadera: Ancient Temple of Southern Lake Where Murasaki Shikibu Conceived The Tale of Genji
Ishiyamadera
Birthplace of The Tale of Genji
Ishiyamadera is a Tendai sect ancient temple said to have been founded in 724 by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. The legend that Heian period female author Murasaki Shikibu conceived The Tale of Genji while viewing the moon at this temple is famous, with "Genji no Ma" (Genji Room) preserved in the grounds.
National Treasure Architecture
Many Important Cultural Properties and National Treasures remain including the Main Hall (National Treasure) and Tahoto Pagoda (National Treasure). The main hall is a precious building conveying Nara period architectural style, with Nyoirin Kannon enshrined in the inner sanctum.
Seasonal Flowers and Autumn Foliage
The grounds are beautiful with flowers through all seasons — plum, cherry, peony, hydrangea, and autumn leaves — with the entire grounds turning red and yellow in autumn. The annual autumn "Ishiyamadera and Murasaki Shikibu Exhibition" is also popular.
Seta River and Fireflies
The clear stream of Seta River flowing beside the grounds becomes a fantastical spot where fireflies dance in early summer. The scene of Ishiyamadera combined with firefly light evokes the elegance of Heian period aesthetics.
