Biwako Cycling: The Sacred Ground of Cycling Around Lake Biwa
Biwako Cycling
Japan's Largest Cycling Course
Biwako Cycling (Biwachi), circumnavigating Lake Biwa, is approximately 190km long (about 150km for the north lake only). Designated as a National Cycle Route by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in 2019, it is internationally famous as Japan's representative cycling route.
Course Attractions
Riding along lakeside roads, cyclists can enjoy spectacular Lake Biwa scenery including the Hira mountain range, Mt. Hiei, and Chikubu Island. The changing scenery by area (west, east, south, north lake) is also appealing, with more highlights than can be seen in one day.
Rental Bicycles
Bicycle stations in Otsu, Kusatsu, Nagahama, Hikone, and other locations offer rental bicycles including road bikes, cross bikes, and electric-assist bicycles. Riders can enjoy at their own pace.
Comprehensive Support Infrastructure
Many roadside stations and restaurants along the route are registered as "Biwachi Support Stations" providing water, rest, and repair support. A beginner-friendly environment is in place.
