Shigaraki Ware

History of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns

Shigaraki ware is one of Japan's "Six Ancient Kilns" (Seto, Tokoname, Echizen, Tamba, Bizen, Shigaraki). Originating in the Nara period, Shigaraki-cho in Koka City is still one of Japan's leading ceramics areas with many kilns.

Tanuki Raccoon Dog Figurines

Shigaraki ware is famous for tanuki raccoon dog figurines. Displayed as lucky charms for business prosperity at restaurants and homes nationwide, they gained national recognition when the Showa Emperor visited Shigaraki.

Ceramics Experiences

Numerous kilns in Shigaraki-cho offer ceramics experiences including wheel throwing and painting. The "Shiga Prefectural Ceramics Forest," one of the world's largest ceramics facilities, has abundant exhibitions, workshops, and shops.

Shigaraki Kogen Railway

Shigaraki Kogen Railway is a convenient local line for accessing the ceramics village of Shigaraki. A leisurely journey can be enjoyed while admiring rural scenery and rows of kilns along the route.
