Masuda City and Sesshu's Hometown: The San'in Nature and Zen Spirit Loved by Sesshu, Master of Japanese Ink Painting

Masuda City, Shimane is where Sesshu Toyo, a representative painter of the Muromachi period, spent his later years (approximately 1486-1506). The master who studied ink painting in China and elevated Japanese ink painting to the realm of art chose Masuda as his final place of activity.

Mampukuji Garden and Ikoji Garden

"Mampukuji" and "Ikoji" temples in Masuda City have gardens said to have been landscaped by Sesshu. Both are designated as National Scenic Beauties, gardens that evoke the Zen spirit with a fusion of karesansui's strict beauty and the grand scenery incorporating San'in's natural landscape. Tea ceremony experiences while viewing the garden are also available.

Sesshu's Genius and Anecdotes

A famous anecdote about Sesshu is "the mouse painting." The story goes that when he was punished by being tied to a pillar as a child, he drew a mouse with his tears and astonished the head priest. This anecdote unique to a genius painter is beloved.

Iwami Region Food Culture and Specialties
