Oki Islands: Experiencing Grand Nature and Geopark Tourism on UNESCO Global Geopark-Certified Remote Islands
Oki Islands, Shimane are islands floating in the Sea of Japan approximately 60 kilometers north of the Shimane Peninsula, collectively called "Oki." Known as an exile destination for successive emperors including Retired Emperor Gotoba and Emperor Godaigo, they have a unique history and culture. They were certified as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2013.
Unique Ecosystems: Paradise of Endemic Species
Oki Islands (Nishinoshima, Nakanoshima, Chiburishima, Okinoshima) are home to many endemic species that evolved uniquely through long island isolation. Rare organisms found only on Oki including Oki giant salamanders, Oki rabbits, and Oki rabbit hollyhock exist here.
Matsunokabe Cliff and Kuniga Coast on Nishinoshima
"Matsunokabe" on Nishinoshima is a sheer 257-meter cliff face. The cliff top features a pastoral scene of grazing cattle and horses, while below the cliff spreads the rugged Sea of Japan. "Kuniga Coast" is also a spectacular spot with continuous rock formations and cliffs.
Oki Bullfighting (Toro-age)
Oki has a bullfighting tradition called "ushi-tsuki" dating from the Edo period. Also used as filming locations for shows including Kamen Rider and Mito Komon, it attracts many tourists as Oki's unique culture.
