Lake Shinji Sunset: Japan's Top 100 Sunsets - Spectacular View of the Sun Setting into Lake Shinji
Lake Shinji spanning Matsue and Izumo cities, Shimane is Japan's seventh largest lake at approximately 79 km². A brackish lake where fresh and salt water mix, it is also famous as a shijimi clam production area. The beauty of sunsets reflected on the lake surface is selected for "Japan's Top 100 Sunsets," and the sunset scenery of Lake Shinji viewed from Matsue City's southern shore is San'in's premier spectacular view.
Sunset Spots: Sodeshi Hill and Matsue Cityscape
The most famous spot for Lake Shinji sunset viewing is "Sodeshi Hill." Watching the sun sink to the horizon from the lakeside lawn is an unforgettable experience. On clear autumn evenings, the harmony of sky and lake surface dyed in red, orange, and purple is breathtaking.
Lake Shinji Shijimi Clams
Lake Shinji is nationally famous as the production area of "Lake Shinji shijimi clams" (Yamato shijimi), accounting for approximately 40% of Japan's shijimi clam catch. The scenery of shijimi fishing boats floating on the lake surface at dusk is also picturesque. In Matsue City restaurants, shijimi miso soup is a standard local dish.
Sunset Cruises
Sunset cruise boats also operate on Lake Shinji, allowing enjoyment of the sunset-dyed lake surface from aboard.
