Edo Period Scrolls Come to Life
The "Hyakumonozoroi Sennin Musha Gyoretsu" (Procession of 1,000 Warriors) is held at Nikko Toshogu's Spring Festival (May) and Autumn Festival (October). This recreation of the Edo-period lord processions features armored warriors, flag-bearers, and attendants parading through the approach.
Yabusame and Martial Arts Demonstrations
Yabusame (mounted archery) and other martial arts are performed during the festival. The sight of archers shooting targets from horseback is powerful and thrilling.
Experience at a World Heritage Site
The procession against the backdrop of the magnificent World Heritage shrine buildings conveys the essence of Japanese history and culture. Planning ahead is important due to crowds.
