Kuroha, Loved by Basho
Kuroha in Otawara City is known as the place where Matsuo Basho stayed the longest during his "Oku no Hosomichi" journey. Basho stayed here in 1689, composing many haiku. It has become a sacred site for haiku enthusiasts.
Kuroha Castle Ruins
Kuroha Castle was a mountain fortress built by the Ozeki clan in the Muromachi period, now developed as a castle ruins park. Known as a cherry blossom spot in spring, the castle ruins and cherry blossoms create beautiful scenery.
Basho's Hall and Haiku Monuments
"Basho's Hall" in the Kuroha area displays artifacts and materials related to Basho. Haiku monument markers are installed throughout the city, and following them on a stroll makes for an enjoyable exploration.
