Japan's Largest Reed Bed

Watarase Retarding Basin, spanning parts of Tochigi, Saitama, Gunma, and Ibaraki prefectures, has Japan's largest reed bed. Registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland, it protects a rich ecosystem.

Spring Reed Burning

The annual "Watarase Reed Burning" in March creates a spectacular sight as the vast reed field burns. The spreading fire is dramatic and attracts many visitors. New reeds sprout after burning, regenerating the rich natural environment.

Wild Bird Paradise

The retarding basin is a renowned birdwatching spot with diverse wild birds. Rare species such as Eastern Marsh Harriers and Great Reed Warblers are confirmed here, drawing birdwatchers from across the country.
