Naruto Whirlpools: Experience One of the World's Largest Natural Phenomena
Naruto Whirlpools: A Spectacular Phenomenon Created by Nature
In the Naruto Strait lying between Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture and Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture, the world's largest whirlpools reaching up to 30 meters in diameter form during spring tides. The torrential currents generated by the tidal level difference between the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea intertwine complexly to form massive whirlpools.
Approaching the Whirlpools by Sightseeing Boat
Sightseeing boats departing from the tourist pier at Naruto Park offer the thrilling experience of getting closest to the center of the whirlpools. Multiple vessels operate including the "Aqua Eddy" with underwater visibility, and the excitement of passing directly above the whirlpools is exceptional.
Uzunomichi
"Uzunomichi," a promenade using the interior of the Onaruto Bridge girder, is a scenic spot where you can look down at the whirlpools through a glass floor 45 meters above sea level. The experience of viewing the whirlpools from above while feeling the bridge sway has a different kind of impact from the sightseeing boat.
Best Time to See Naruto Whirlpools
Whirlpools develop most during spring tide ebb and flow (twice daily). The spring (March–April) and autumn (September–October) spring tides see the largest scale. Checking the tidal chart on Naruto City's tourism website before visiting is recommended.
Access
