Mt. Tsurugi Trekking: Walking the Sky of Bamboo Grass on the Roof of Shikoku
Mt. Tsurugi–Jiroukyu Traverse: Shikoku's Finest Ridge Trekking
The traverse course from Mt. Tsurugi (1,955m) in Tokushima Prefecture to adjacent Jiroukyu (1,929m) is Shikoku's premier trekking course, walking ridges with spreading "sasa-hara" (bamboo grass meadows). On clear days, a grand panorama overlooking the entire Shikoku mountain range spreads out.
Course Overview
A popular course is using the Mt. Tsurugi lift from Minokoze trailhead to near the summit hut, then traversing via Mt. Tsurugi summit (approximately 10 minutes) to Jiroukyu (approximately 2 hours round trip). The exhilarating feeling of walking along the bamboo grass ridge allows full enjoyment of Shikoku's great nature.
Best Season
Summer (July–August) sees alpine plants in full bloom, with beautiful contrast between sky blue and bamboo grass green. Autumn (October–November) offers spectacular views with autumn foliage and yellow bamboo grass mingling. Deep winter has snow accumulation, requiring crampons and other equipment.
Mountain Hut and Accommodation
"Mt. Tsurugi Summit Hut" near the summit allows accommodation and meals (reservations required). The experience of greeting sunrise from the summit is exceptional.
Access
Approximately 2 hours from Tokushima city to Minokoze trailhead (by car). Lift operates late April to mid-November.
