Awa Washi Paper: Japan's Paper Culture Continuing from the Nara Period

Awa washi paper (Awa washi) from Tokushima Prefecture is a traditional craft with history continuing from the Nara period (8th century). The abundant water of the Yoshino River basin and the excellent production area for kozo (mulberry) and mitsumata, the raw materials for washi, have enabled the production of superior washi.

Characteristics of Awa Washi Paper

Awa washi is characterized by being sturdy and highly durable, yet thin with transparency. It is used widely from artistic applications including calligraphy, watercolor painting, printmaking, and dyed paper to everyday items including shoji screens, fusuma sliding doors, and lanterns.

Awa Washi Traditional Industries Hall

At the "Awa Washi Traditional Industries Hall" in Yoshinogawa City, Tokushima Prefecture, there are exhibits to learn about awa washi's history and manufacturing process, with washi paper-making experiences also offered. Factory tours to see craftsmen's techniques up close are also popular.

Collaboration with Contemporary Art

In recent years, works fusing traditional washi techniques with contemporary art have also attracted attention. Additionally, lighting fixtures, stationery, and fashion accessories using washi have been commercialized, with new washi culture being born.

Access

The Awa Washi Traditional Industries Hall is approximately 5 minutes by car from JR Awa-Kashima Station. Approximately 40 minutes by car from Tokushima city.
