Otome Inari's Thousand Torii
Nezu Shrine is an ancient shrine in Bunkyo Ward, with the "Otome Inari" featuring a tunnel of small torii gates called "1,000 Torii." Different from Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Taisha in its rustic atmosphere, it is popular as a photogenic spot.
Bunkyo Azalea Festival
The "Bunkyo Azalea Festival" is held annually April to early May, with about 3,000 azalea plants blooming in the shrine's azalea garden. The spring scenery of colorful azaleas and shrine buildings is magnificent, attracting many worshippers and tourists.
Deep Connection with the Tokugawa Clan
Nezu Shrine is known for 5th shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi building the shrine halls to transfer the shogun position to his nephew. The current main hall, worship hall, and tower gate are early Edo-period architecture, designated Important Cultural Properties.
