Nijisseiki Pear and Tottori Pear Agriculture: Autumn Sweetness at Japan's Top Producing Region
Tottori Prefecture boasts Japan's top pear production volume, with "Nijisseiki" (20th Century) pear in particular known nationwide as Tottori's representative branded fruit. Discovered in Chiba Prefecture in 1888, this variety is perfectly suited to the soil and climate of Tottori's sand dune areas and has been carefully cultivated for over a century.
Characteristics and Appeal of Nijisseiki Pear
The biggest characteristic of Nijisseiki pear is its distinctive crisp texture and elegant flavor with refreshing sweetness mixed with appropriate tartness. The skin is yellow-green and thin, with abundant moisture. As the representative green pear variety, it has a distinction separate from red pear varieties like Hosui and Kosui.
Pear Picking Experiences
From late August through October, many orchards around Tottori City and Kurayoshi City offer pear picking experiences. Eating freshly harvested pears on the spot while listening to orchard staff explanations is a special experience.
Pear-Based Gourmet and Souvenirs
In Tottori, pear-based confectionery is abundant: pear juice, pear jelly, pear tart, chiffon cake with pear kneaded in. Local cafes and bakeries also offer pear-featuring menu items.
Scenery of Sand Dune Area Pear Orchards
Vast pear orchards spread through the sand dune areas around Tottori Sand Dunes. In spring, white pear blossoms bloom spectacularly; in autumn, yellow-green pears ripening among green leaves create a beautiful rural landscape.
