Sakaiminato Seafood Market: Fresh Seafood Landed Moments Ago at One of Japan's Leading Fishing Ports

Sakaiminato City in Tottori Prefecture is a fishing port city adjacent to Mihogaseki at the tip of the Shimane Peninsula, boasting top-class national rankings for landings of tuna, beni-zuwaigani (red snow crab), squid, mackerel, and flounder. Seafood markets, eateries, and izakaya restaurants line the area around the port for enjoying fresh seafood at local prices.

Sakaiminato Fish Center

The "Fish Center" adjacent to Sakaiminato's fishing port is a market offering fresh seafood purchasable directly from wholesalers. Open from early morning, fish landed that morning's catch are on display. The in-facility restaurant allows having purchased fish prepared, or enjoying sashimi set meals and seafood rice bowls.

Seasonal Flavors

Sakaiminato's seafood changes face with each season. Winter's Matsuba crab and red snow crab, summer's squid and tuna, spring and autumn's flounder and halibut โ€” seasonal seafood can be enjoyed in any season. Winter crab in particular is exquisite, with many crab specialty restaurants lining up.

Sakaiminato Channel and Mihogaseki Lighthouse Views

The scenery of the Shimane Peninsula visible across the Sakaiminato Channel from Sakaiminato City is also beautiful. Driving to Mihogaseki Lighthouse (one of Japan's oldest stone lighthouses) is also popular.

About 10-15 minutes on foot from JR Sakaiminato Line Sakaiminato Station. About 45 minutes from Yonago Station on the Kitaro Train.
