Sand Museum: Art Palace at Tottori Sand Dunes Where World's Best Sand Sculptures Gather

The "Sand Museum" adjacent to Tottori Sand Dunes in Tottori City was permanently established in 2012 as the world's only museum specializing in displaying sculptures made from "sand." Each year, world-top-level sand sculptors from Europe and North America visit Japan to create enormous sand sculptures 5-10 meters tall on different annual themes.

World Scenes Revived in Sand

Exhibitions held from autumn through the following summer fill the museum with sand sculptures aligned with that year's theme (e.g., "World Travel in Sand: Europe Edition," "World History and Mythology"). Sand sculptures of people, buildings, and animals carved with extraordinary precision astonish visitors with their lifelike realism.

Behind-the-Scenes of Sand Sculpture Creation

The material for sand sculptures is not sand from Tottori Sand Dunes, but special sand containing appropriate clay content. The process of carving while compacting with water is truly sculpture. Works completed over weeks to months receive surface coating to prevent drying, but are demolished after the exhibition ends. That "ephemerality" is also one of sand sculpture art's charms.

Enjoying Together with the Sand Dunes

At Tottori Sand Dunes, a 5-minute walk from the Sand Museum, visitors can also enjoy camel rides, paragliding, and sandboarding. The dunes and museum together make for half a day to a full day of leisurely sightseeing.

Access

About 20 minutes by bus from JR Tottori Station (alight at Sakyu Center).
