Wakasa Railway: Enjoying Nostalgic Showa-Era Train Journey at the Steam Locomotive Village
Wakasa Railway running through Wakasa Town, Yazu District, Tottori Prefecture is a historic regional railway that opened in 1930 (Showa 5). This 19.2-kilometer route connecting Kooge Station and Wakasa Station still operates station buildings, iron bridges, and turntables built in the early Showa era, also called "a moving Meiji, Taisho, and Showa railway museum."
National Registered Tangible Cultural Property Station Buildings
Each station building on Wakasa Railway is Showa modern architecture strongly retaining the appearance from the time of opening. Hayabusa Station, Hatto Station, and Inaba-Funaoka Station are designated as National Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, attracting not only railway fans but also architecture enthusiasts.
SL/DL Display and Riding Experiences
Steam locomotives (C12 and C11 types) and diesel locomotives (DD16 type) are preserved in operating condition at Wakasa Station, with riding experiences available during events. At the "SL Wakasa Railway Festival" held several times annually, many fans gather to enjoy SL running.
Wakasa's Nature and Hot Springs
Wakasa Town is a small mountain town in the Chugoku Mountains, appealing for its rich nature. "Wakasa Onsen" also flows here, allowing recovery from hiking and river activities.
Access
JR Inbi Line Kooge Station, the transfer station for Wakasa Railway, is about 25 minutes from JR Tottori Station.
